Shiloh Pond Hike

On Valentine's Day, Linda & Paul Trueworthy and I spent a couple of hours hiking/snowshoeing into Shiloh Pond. We braved the blustery winds and were rewarded with brilliant sunshine. As we snowshoed toward the pond, we could see Owl's Head and Black Nubble before us. The pond itself sits quietly amidst the trees. It was peaceful and beautiful. The kind of quiet you can only find deep in the woods.

We then had the pleasure of dining on the front porch of "Chateau Du Lax." The main entree being "Peanut Buttere and Jell-a" (to be said with a French accent) - (aka PPJ). We all commented on how gourmet PPJ always tastes when hiking.

We didn't linger long after our gourmet meal, realizing that it was still quite cold and blustery. It didn't take us long to warm back up. We stopped for a photo shoot. (What hike is ever complete without the photo shoot?) Unfortunately, the delayed timer didn't work, after many attempts by Linda. But, we still got a couple of pictures to remember our day.

It truly amazes me that we have so many incredible places to enjoy right in our own back yard. Why would you want to live anywhere else?

  1. Sounds like a great hike. How do I find it ... you know how easily I get lost!

  2. This is easy. I've hiked it twice in 3 days (I had to retrieve a water bottle).
Follow Rte. 27 to the Tuft Pond Road, located diagonally across from the Apple Shed. If you're travelling into Kingfield from Carrabassett, go past the DOT garage and the blue sign for Deer Farm Camps on your right. It's the next right after the blue sign.)
Follow the road to the top ... about 2 1/2 miles ... and park off to the side. From here it’s a flat hike into Shiloh Pond .. about 35-40 minutes. Go straight after leaving your car and follow this road. In the winter, the trail is packed by snowmobiles. Go past Alder Road and Grindstone Pond Road, then Fox Hill Road. The next road on the left is Shiloh Pond Road. There is no sign. It's about a 20-minute walk from the car. After hiking another 10 minutes, you’ll see clearing on the right and a gated bridge. Step over the bridge. In about 5 minutes, you'll see a rustic cabin ... Chateau du Lac .. owned by Amos P. Winter's family. No one lives there. It's a great spot for lunch. A short walk later, is Shiloh Pond, offering nice views of Black Nubble and a glimpse of Owls Head.
A nice side hike: Follow the Grindstone Pond Road to Grindstone Pond. It's about a half hour walk.
Trust me: You can't get lost!
