Did anyone else notice that Warren Cook was sporting a Sugarloaf belt buckle during his speech at the CVOA annual meeting Saturday night? Nice touch from the CEO of Saddleback! Maybe CVOA should have a group outing to Saddleback during a blackout day next year.

WHERE AM I?

WHERE AM I?

We're hosting a GPS course this June, a class designed to give beginners an idea of how to find their way in, around and out of the the woods. There will also be some tips for advanced navigators.
The course will be conducted by Patty Cormier, a district forester for the state of Maine, from 9 am to 1 pm June 13 in the Carrabassett Room of the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel. Coffee and bagels will be served.
The cost is only $10 and the Patty will bring GPS units to practice on.
It should be great fun ... I took the course last year and it was terrific.

Potluck in Paradise

If you're looking for a great birthday cake recipe, check out Barbara's rum cake in CVOA's new cookbook. Ruthie made it for Nelson's birthday using Splenda instead of sugar ... and substituting rum for water in the glaze. Fabulous!

Shiloh Pond Hike

On Valentine's Day, Linda & Paul Trueworthy and I spent a couple of hours hiking/snowshoeing into Shiloh Pond. We braved the blustery winds and were rewarded with brilliant sunshine. As we snowshoed toward the pond, we could see Owl's Head and Black Nubble before us. The pond itself sits quietly amidst the trees. It was peaceful and beautiful. The kind of quiet you can only find deep in the woods.

We then had the pleasure of dining on the front porch of "Chateau Du Lax." The main entree being "Peanut Buttere and Jell-a" (to be said with a French accent) - (aka PPJ). We all commented on how gourmet PPJ always tastes when hiking.

We didn't linger long after our gourmet meal, realizing that it was still quite cold and blustery. It didn't take us long to warm back up. We stopped for a photo shoot. (What hike is ever complete without the photo shoot?) Unfortunately, the delayed timer didn't work, after many attempts by Linda. But, we still got a couple of pictures to remember our day.

It truly amazes me that we have so many incredible places to enjoy right in our own back yard. Why would you want to live anywhere else?

Gulf Hagas Outing

We're planning a weekend trip to Gulf Hagas, the so-called Grand Canyon of the East. We're trying to get a rough idea of who's interested so we can book a campground with enough space. We can get a smaller primitive campground at Gulf Hagas that will sleep about 20 ... or a group camping site around Moosehead. We'll be travelling in September so the foliage should be great. And the hike is beautiful! Anyone interested?
